Fewer dogs available for adoption from shelter in Chilliwack since COVID-19

Quick returns of dogs back to owners may explain why there are fewer pups looking for forever homes

The number of dogs up for adoption at the FVRD Care Centre in Chilliwack decreased significantly since the advent of COVID-19.

A quick check on Sept. 3 showed only three dogs in the CARE Centre Adoptables file looking for forever homes.

The CARE Centre officials say they have experienced “a reduction in the number of impounded dogs” at the facility on Wolfe Road, according to the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) second quarterly update.

“Staff believe this reduction can be attributed to quick returns of at-large dogs to owners who have been home due to COVID-19, as well as fewer dogs running at large due to owners being home and attending to their pets,” according to the report of Aug. 19.

“There also has been an increase in adoption interest due to people having the time to put toward welcoming a new dog into their home.”

The shelter’s online Adoptables photo file contains photos and updates of available dogs, as well as those that may be available soon. The doors of the CARE Centre have been closed to the public since March, but staff have been available to receive adoption enquiries via email at adoptadog@fvrd.ca and respond to reports of aggressive dogs, at large and stray dogs, barking or nuisance dogs via email at animalcontrol@fvrd.ca or phone 1-844-495-CARE (2273).
