The health region spanning from Abbotsford to Hope has seen the greatest number of new COVID-19 cases in B.C. detected in recent weeks.
More than one-third of all the new cases diagnosed in mid-June were in the Fraser East region, which includes Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and Hope.
Figures released by the provincial government earlier this week showed that 67 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the Fraser East region between June 8 to 21. (See the stats here.) Only two other regions (Vancouver and Fraser South) had more than a handful of new cases detected over that time period. Both those regions have more people than Fraser East. (Vancouver saw 36 new cases, while Fraser South had 42.)
The new cases reflect the place of residence of the person diagnosed with COVID-19, not necessarily the place of transmission. But the figures suggest the Fraser East communities are seeing the most transmission of COVID-19 of any region of the province.
Over the last two weeks, the number of new cases detected has ticked upwards – but remains much lower than at the height of the pandemic in B.C. Ten new cases, and one new death, were declared on Friday.
B.C. currently has 159 active test-positive cases, with 17 people in hospital.
Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 2,878 cases in B.C. Nearly 500 of those have been in the Fraser East region.
