The family of a Chilliwack man who suffered a serious spinal injury following a tragic mountain biking collision has set up a GoFundMe account to help with expenses.

Doug Henderson was cycling along a trail in the Chilliwack Community Forest when his bike hit a patch of mud and launched him and his bike down a ravine.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of four boys who found him at the bottom of the ravine, Chilliwack Search and Rescue members were able to locate Henderson.

Brothers Seth and Luke Hampson and friends Teagan and Xander Renaerts, who were also biking in the area, stopped to help Henderson after 15-year-old Seth heard his muffled cries for help.

Henderson suffered serious spinal damage and was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital where doctors told him he would likely be paralyzed. On Wednesday he had surgery to reconstruct the C5-C7 area of his spine.

On Thursday, Chris Henderson set up a GoFundMe account with a goal of raising $100,000.

“The family now has to prepare for the long road ahead and start to navigate the new financial demands that can come with such a serious accident,” Chris wrote. “The funds raised in this campaign will help the family with medical expenses as well as constant trips into Royal Columbian for the next year or so as Doug begins to recover.”

Doug Henderson was born and raised in Chilliwack and is married to Tammy Henderson, also of Chilliwack. Together they have three children.

Henderson has always been involved in the community mostly through minor hockey and has always lead a very active lifestyle, Chris added.
