Langley RCMP have arrested a suspect in the hit and run of on-duty officer and then sped away from the scene of the collision on Friday, Aug. 9.

At about 11:20 a.m., an officer doing traffic enforcement in the 5000-block of 208 Street was hit by a vehicle, said. Cpl. Zynal Sharoom.

The injured officer was believed to have been outside of his vehicle at the time, possibly using a radar gun, Sharoom said.

The vehicle did not stop, but instead fled north up 208 Street, said Sharoom.

The officer was taken to hospital, with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Just before 5 p.m., Sharoom confirmed that police had arrested a 22-year-old Langley man at a home near the scene, and recovered a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident, a blue Infiniti G35.

Charges had not yet been laid, said Sharoom.

"The Langley RCMP would like to express a huge thanks to the local public and our safety partners that involved themselves in the incident with our officer this morning," said Supt. Adrian Marsden, the officer in charge of the Langley RCMP detachment. "Numerous by-standers stopped to provide both medical assistance or waited to provide witness accounts. The amazing response from on duty and off-duty British Columbia Ambulance Service paramedics and members of the Langley City Fire department was incredible. Even members of the community who had been stopped in the traffic enforcement campaign graciously did all they could to assist! Given the egregiousness of his injuries, our officer’s fate likely could have been far worse if it had not been for the kindness of those who helped. It proved to us once again how lucky we are to live and work in this community."

The area around 208 Street and 50 Avenue was temporarily closed while police investigated the scene, but it re-opened by mid-afternoon.

Police are asking anyone with information, including those who might have dash cam footage from around the area near that time, to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200, and quote file number 24-25379.
