An inmate at Mountain Institution serving an indeterminate sentence for two counts of first-degree murder has died in custody.

Douglas John Holtam died on Saturday, Dec. 4, of apparent natural causes. The Mission man was convicted of killing his wife and daughter and the attempted murder of his son.

Holtam had been serving time since Dec. 22, 1999. The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases of the death of an inmate, Correctional Services Canada will review the circumstances of the death. CSC policy requires that the RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service also be notified.
