Kent awarded $50K for anniversary celebrations

The $53,000 grant will support the district’s 125th anniversary next year

The District of Kent will be getting more than $50,000 for its anniversary celebrations next year, thanks to funding from the federal government.

At an announcement Friday (Sept. 6), MP Jati Sidhu awarded the district with $53,000 from the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program for its 125th anniversary celebrations. The program provides funding for community anniversaries, local festivals, and legacy projects.

“Festivals and celebrations provide great opportunities to get together with family and friends, and to celebrate our culture and heritage,” Sidhu said in a release.

“Through music and dance performances, artists’ demonstrations, heritage performers, storytelling and indigenous programming, local talent will be promoted, and a community will be joyously engaged. I am very proud to support Kent’s 125th Anniversary Celebration with an investment of $53,300.”

Although it’s still several months away, the District of Kent’s 125th anniversary sub-committee has already begun planning for the year of celebrations, which will include a Homecoming celebration on the August long weekend in 2020.

“The Kent 125 Sub-Committee is working diligently to plan an exciting celebration for us, not only the for the Homecoming Weekend, but throughout the whole year,” mayor Sylvia Pranger said in a release.

“We hope that we can share the true feeling of the pride we have in our community, together with residents and visitors. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us.”

The 125th anniversary sub-committee will have an information booth at the Fall Fair and Corn Festival this weekend, where residents can learn more about the celebrations planned for 2020.
