During their most recent meeting, members of the District of Kent Council encouraged residents to book their COVID-19 vaccines.

Mayor Sylvia Pranger credited local pharmacies for the rising COVID-19 vaccination rate among young people. According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, about 25 per cent of children aged 5 to 11 have been partially vaccinated. 66 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated as of Jan. 12.

Coun. Stan Watchorn echoed Pranger’s acknowledgments of local pharmacies and health care workers.

“I encourage everybody to get vaccinated where they and when they are medically able to do so,” Watchorn added. “I’d also like to acknowledge (provincial health officer) Dr. Bonnie Henry. I can’t think of anyone who has provided more compassionate care. I am in absolute admiration of that woman and what she’s done.”

In other council business:

- Council approved the Seabird Island community’s temporary use permit application for a healing and trauma centre. The centre is designed to provide culturally appropriate healing and helping those with trauma-related concerns regarding colonization, oppression, discrimination and racism.

- Council approved up to $74,000 for six summer student positions for a 16-week period to “provide positive work experience for local youth in the community.” In the past, the district received grant funding from Serivce Canada under its Canada Summer Jobs Program to fund the summer positions.

- Coun. Duane Post recently attended an event at Agassiz Christian School, where students presented local and global environmental goals, including bringing salmon back to local waters.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at Municipal Hall in Agassiz. Those who wish to attend via Microsoft Teams may do so by registering in advance at kentbc.ca.
