Several Chilliwack youth organizations are taking a break from activities due to a suspected rise in cases of COVID-19 in the community.

It began with Capella Dance Academy last week, which informed their dance community of a positive case and two days of exposure, Oct. 21 and 22.

Then on the evening of Nov. 1, a dozen Chilliwack schools sent out letters to families advising them they are aware of cases in their schools, without providing details of exposure dates. On Nov. 2, GW Graham announced a week-long break from their athletic programs. Hawks Lacrosse and Chilliwack Giants have also issued notices to parents that they are suspending play temporarily or for the season.

Then on Nov. 2, Project Dance also announced they have decided to close as a precautionary measure as they assess the risk in the community.

Chilliwack School of Performing Arts has also closed for a week as a precautionary measure.

“Due to the current number of schools that are contact tracing, we have decided it is prudent to not run physical classes at CSOPA this week,” they said to parents in an email and on their social media. “This action is far more cautious than anything Fraser Health asks anyone to do, but it is a decision we made with the health of everyone in our community in mind.”

“We do not have a primary transmission event at CSOPA but we would like to keep it that way,” they added.

There are no official numbers of cases cropping in Chilliwack yet, and no confirmation that the rumoured spike in local youth is from Capella Dance Academy.
