Local COVID-19 cases remain high as Omicron variant persists

100+ cases of COVID-19 in Agassiz-Harrison in first two weeks of the year

Editor’s Note: Despite implications to the contrary during the Jan. 14 press conference, B.C. health officials are, for the time being, providing regional COVID-19 information. COVID-19 is behaving differently from previous variants because of Omicron. As such, there are different types of data that offer a clearer picture of how this wave will impact our communities and health care system. As of publication, case numbers are still provided on a regional level.

The Observer will continue to work with available resources to offer a weekly perspective on the local COVID-19 picture.

Agassiz-Harrison’s COVID-19 cases remain steadily in the 50s as the Omicron variant continues to stress the province’s health care system.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) recorded 58 new cases of COVID-19 in the Agassiz-Harrison local health region. This information released late Wednesday (Jan. 19) afternoon indicates that there has been a total of 117 cases of COVID-19 in the first two weeks of 2022.

As of Jan. 17, 32 per cent of children ages 5 to 11 have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, up six per cent from last week. In another one of the fastest-growing demographics, 78 per cent of senior citizens aged 70 and older have received a booster of the COVID-19 vaccine. Other categories have shown slight growth; this is the breakdown for the remaining demographics:

12 and older: 82 per cent fully vaccinated (86 per cent with at least one dose)

- 12-17: 66 per cent fully vaccinated (71 per cent with at least one dose)

- 18 and older: 84 per cent fully vaccinated (87 per cent with at least one dose)

- 18-49: 76 per cent fully vaccinated (82 per cent with at least one dose)

- 50 and older: 89 per cent fully vaccinated (91 per cent with at least one dose)

As of publication, Fraser Health has reported no further upcoming vaccination clinics planned for Agassiz-Harrison.
