Each new season, members of the Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association hand-pick a crop or flower, which sets the theme for the upcoming Fall Fair.

This theme allows the association to showcase different kids of agriculturalists and educate attendees on farming. This year’s bountiful crop is the showiest of them all!

Sunflowers are one of summertime’s most diverse gifts. They are a farmer’s friend, as they provide butterflies and bees with pollen, have tasty little seeds that are delicious additions to salads and good eating for birds and people. Sunflower oil is one of the healthiest oils for cooking. No matter what, sunflowers are a beautiful sunny flower that brightens the day and just makes everything better!

Did you know that sunflowers can grow to be over 10 feet tall? In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records reports that the tallest sunflower in history was a whopping 30 feet tall! Although they don’t all grow large enough to break records, sunflowers are much more than a pretty flower you see in someone’s garden. To celebrate the 2017 Fair theme, “Year of the Sunflower” we have planned lots of fun festivities!

Victoria Brookes, president of the Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association explained at the beginning of the growing season, Allenby’s Farm Store supplied folks with sunflower plants. When the store ran out of flowers, they gave out seeds. Come witness and enjoy the “fruits of the labor” at the show, with prizes awarded for the tallest sunflower, the biggest flower, sunflower floral arrangements, as well as baking that highlights those delicious seeds.

On Saturday at 11:30am at the Outdoor Stage, judging commences, with prizes sponsored by Allenby’s Farm Store.
