Nearly 100 inmates have recovered during Kent Institution COVID-19 outbreak

One remains in recovery after worst local COVID-19 outbreak on record

The largest Agassiz-Harrison COVID-19 outbreak has come to an important milestone.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said that effective Wednesday (Feb. 9), all 99 inmates involved in a six-week outbreak have recovered from COVID-19. At least 18 employees were infected with COVID-19 during this outbreak as well.

The outbreak began on Dec. 28; the projected end-date for the outbreak is March 9. Typically, the CSC projects outbreak end dates to 28 days after the last inmate has recovered, per provincial health directives.

A second outbreak was included in the initial outbreak involving two inmates – one who has not yet recovered from COVID-19 and one inmate who has recovered as of Jan. 10.

No deaths have been associated with either outbreak.

As of publication, 67.8 per cent of the Kent Institution inmate population has been fully vaccinated (72.4 per cent partially vaccinated). About 28 per cent of inmates have received a booster. At Mountain Institution, 84 per cent of inmates are fully vaccinated (88.7 per cent partially vaccinated). 64.9 per cent of inmates have received a booster.

Kwìkwèxwelhp Healing Lodge is 100 per cent partially vaccinated and 95 per cent fully vaccinated. 90 per cent of inmates have received a booster.
