New heating, cooling units on the way for Agassiz’s Agricultural Pavilion

The Agricultural and Horticultural Association has applied for a $25K grant to support the upgrades

Feeling a little hot in the Agricultural Pavilion this summer? Don’t fret — the six heating and cooling units in the pavilion will be replaced this year, whether or not the Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association’s grant goes through.

“We really do support the community,” Victoria Brookes said about the building, which is used for everything from floor hockey to scouts to baseball to bingo.

“The building is well-used by the community,” she said, which meant its heating and cooling units are well-used too.

Brookes had come before council Monday (April 8) to ask the district to partner with the association for grant purposes.

“We’re not asking for any money or any deductions, we’re just asking you to launder some money for us,” Brookes said, to the general laughter of the room.

As the association is not a registered charity, it needed a municipal body to accept the funds on the association’s behalf. The district will not be responsible for any part of the $47,000 cost.

According to Brookes, the association currently has $15,000 in funds saved up for the project, with plans to raise more. The $25,000 Farm Credit Canada grant the association is applying for would allow the association to replace all the units at once.

If the grant doesn’t go through, the association will still replace half of the units this year, with the remaining units being replaced sometime in the future. Although it’s cheaper to do it all at once, “we do need to replace at least some of the units for the winter season,” she said.

The Agassiz Agricultural and Horticultural Association won’t find out until August of this year if the grant funding is approved.
