90 homes affected under order, Tradex open for evacuees

Abbotsford Police are pleading with Huntingdon Village residents to heed the evacuation order and leave the area immediately.

The order was issued by the City of Abbotsford at 4 a.m., Nov. 28, and Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue went door-to-door notifying the 90 homes affected.

“We want people to leave as soon as possible,” said Const. Paul Walker, media officer with the Abbotsford Police Department. “We plead with people to leave this area for their own safety.”

Evacuated residents are being told to either seek shelter with friends of family, or to head to Tradex building at 1190 Cornell Street.

While the Nooksack River hasn’t overflowed its banks yet, localized flooding has occurred in Huntingdon, and Sumas in Washington.

Walker said the order issued this morning is for anticipated water flows from the flooding in Sumas, which is headed north.

When Abbotsford News was on scene in Huntingdon, it appeared many residents had not yet left. Some property owners have sandbagged the perimeter of their homes.

Walker said they don’t have the exact numbers of people who have left, but many have remained behind.

“It does look like quite a few people in the area have decided to stay,” he said. “It’s one of those things where, I think, people look out their front door and say like, ‘I don’t have water on my front door yet, so I’m still good.’ But that could change.”

Abbotsford Police are advising people to stay off roads across the city due to localized flooding.
