For some, it’s an answer to prayers. For others, it’s an annoyance. Like it or not, though, speed bumps on Ashton Road in Agassiz are coming to stay.

District of Kent employees began work installing speed bumps along Ashton Road between Lougheed Highway and Pioneer Avenue on Monday, July 19. Work is expected to carry on until the end of the month.

According to the district, single lane alternating traffic will be maintained through the duration of the project and no road closures are expected.

Ashton Road has been the site of a number of traffic-related fatalities and issues surrounding increased traffic and speed. Concerned residents presented a petition to council about a month ago, highlighting a number of testimonials from people who live in the area who were concerned about aggressive drivers and motorists ignoring children at play signage.

The petitioners had a number of suggestions, which included increased traffic enforcement and municipal recognition as a traffic slowed neighbourhood.

During the May 26 meeting, council unanimously approved directing district staff to come up with solutions to calm traffic along the road.

Local reactions on social media have been mixed but mostly receptive

“I would like to thank the Council of the District of Kent for taking safety as a concern for slowing down the speeders,” Eric Morrow wrote. “Ashton Road will be much safer.”

“Take out those stupid ‘roundabouts’ on Agassiz Avenue and do the same,” Ivy Kehoe suggested.

“No more dust in your beer!” Paige Thiessen declared.
