The District of Kent’s community spray park at Centennial Park is underway.

Mayor John Van Laerhoven and Coun. Susan Spaeti, chair of the parks and recreation committee, were on site Aug. 9 to do a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new park.

“The spray park is an exciting new addition to Centennial Park and will provide endless hours of affordable fun for children of all ages in our community,” Van Laerhoven said.

“Its location was strategically selected by council to ensure safe and easy access to nearby amenities and parking. We anticipate the park to be very well utilized during the hot summer months.”

Spaeti added, “Providing recreation opportunities for the community is important to the well-being of our residents. The spray park will enable families and friends to gather, have a picnic and watch the kids cool off.

“The anticipated spray park grand opening is set for Sept. 1 and will be a great event to showcase all that the park has to offer.”

The spray park will include approximately 2,200 square feet of spray area, incorporating a toddler, youth and family spray zone.

The “nature” theme park will feature seven in-ground spray nozzles, seven above-ground animated spray creatures and a Super Splash Bucket!

Benches, a water fountain, open park space and a walking path connecting the play space to the nearby amenities will surround the spray park.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August with a community spray park grand opening event anticipated on Sept. 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Centennial Park.

The celebration will feature a complimentary barbecue with hot dogs, corn on the cob, watermelon and lemonade, children’s games and activities.

Mayor and council will be in attendance along with special delegates to celebrate the new water park.

Once operational, the spray park will be open for free public access until the summer’s warm weather comes to an end.

Council approved the district’s spray park project in the 2017 capital budget plan with the majority of its money coming from the Wayward Pines Legacy Fund.
