School was back in session on Tuesday
Teachers were able to shuttle back and forth in a school bus through the Fraser Cascade school district, along a stretch of highway designated for essential travel only.
Balan Moorthy, superintendent of schools, said that about 20 people took the bus going from Agassiz to Hope, and about half a dozen took the bus in the opposite direction. The bus traveled along Highway 7, where there were two landslides on Nov. 14. There is still work being done to clean up the main slide area, where there was still water flowing over the road on Monday.
Boston Bar was the only school not open on Tuesday.
Moorthy said while there were some glitches with a pick-up location on Tuesday morning, it all went well.
“Our staff have been flexible and adaptable during these challenging times,” he said.
Fraser Cascade had school closures from Nov. 16 to Nov. 19 following the initial road closures and slide events. School was closed again with no notice on Wednesday morning, though, due to ongoing weather conditions and road conditions along Highway 7. Some had already made their way to school or were in transit.
“As a result, we have decided to close the entire district,” their website stated. “Our goal is to always consider the safety of our students and staff. We sincerely apologize for the late notice and are working hard to get any students who may have already been picked up by the school buses back home.”
