A popular outdoor fundraiser returns to Chilliwack in June as Chilliwack Community Services (CCS) holds its third annual Tour de Chilliwack bike event.

People are out and about now collecting pledges in the lead-up to June 10, when they’ll hit the roads and trails on the north end of Chilliwack. The family-friendly event sees cyclists tackling 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100 kilometre routes.

There were 198 riders in 2022, combining to raise nearly $27,000.

Funds go towards 37 programs provided by CCS including Meals on Wheels, Sardis Family Place and Youth Community Recreation. CCS provides programs for the youngest of children, youths, adults, families and seniors, and fundraising coordinator Shirley Triemstra said none of it would be possible without the generosity of Chilliwackians.

“Chilliwack is an amazing community,” she enthused. “Without you CCS would not be able to continue supporting over 13,000 people annually”

The goal this year is to raise $30,000. Riders contribute by paying a registration fee or collecting pledges and the first 25 people raising $500 or more receive an exclusive 2023 Tour de Chilliwack hoodie.

Every rider gets a Tour de Chilliwack t-shirt. They also get vouchers for the food trucks lining the routes, and there are games to play as they go, with the chance to earn prizes.

Anyone can sign up for the Tour de Chilliwack, as an individual or as part of a team, and there is no pressure to go fast. All ages and all levels of ability and fitness are welcome.

When riders get back to the finish area at a local farm, they can enjoy live music, a bouncy castle, a silent auction and more. These are new additions this year.

“This event started during COVID, so we kept it very low key to abide by all the rules,” Triemstra said. “Now that COVID is done we have increased the activities with the thought that we could spend more time together while giving the participants a place to relax and enjoy after their ride.”

The 2023 Tour de Chilliwack is presented by Neels Heating & Cooling. Go online to register at www.comserv.bc.ca or call Triemstra at 604-793-7221.
