UPDATE: Police investigating after targeted shooting on Fairfield Island in Chilliwack

Attendees at school play briefly in lockdown Wednesday evening with heavy police presence in area

The Chilliwack Serious Crimes Unit is investigating a targeted shooting in a residential neighbourhood on Fairfield Island in thee evening of May 2.

The Chilliwack RCMP received reports of shots fired at around 7:45 p.m. in the 10000-block of Fairview Drive.

Three bullet holes could be seen in the house at 10168 Fairview the next day, one in a window, two in the frame.

General duty officers supported by the Lower Mainland Police Dog Service arrived with the support of the RCMP’s Air 1 helicopter.

Neighbours reported a heavy police presence in vehicles with officers patrolling on foot, apparently searching for someone. Their focus was on a particular house on the east side of Fairview in which bullet holes could be seen on Thursday.

“The area around the incident was cordoned off and the incident was targeted,” according to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail. “No one was injured.”

Rail could not confirm if the shooting took place in or outside of a particular house, or if there was a suspect in custody or on the lam. Neighbours, however, reported arrests were made.

“The police are in the evidence gathering stage of the investigation and the Chilliwack Serious Crimes Unit has conduct of the file.”

As often happens with such incidents, chatter on social media exploded during and after the police attended the area.

Some residents reported they were told to stay indoors, and more than a hundred people were forced to stay inside Strathcona elementary as they tried to leave after a school play ended.

A stretch of Fairview was closed late into the evening between Belair Drive and Strathcona Road as police focused on the one house in particular.

There was a report of police looking for a male described as 5’11”, slim build with high cheekbones, red dyed hair on top shaved on the sides with grey track pants. He has tattoos on both sides of his neck and was carrying a white iPad.

Someone then posted a surveillance video still of a man fitting that description running through yards. The man was identified by those posting on social media as someone well-known to police, but RCMP will not confirm if they have a suspect in custody or if that man was involved in any way.

One resident told The Progress the suspect knocked on her door asking her to call a taxi only minutes after the shooting.

The incident comes three months after Chilliwack’s only homicide of the year, and some have speculated this week’s shooting may somehow be connected to the Jan. 31 shooting that saw the death of Cody Isaacson.

The incident also points once again to the frustration residents are having when there is a known drug house on an otherwise quiet residential street.
