Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $90 million investment by federal and provincial governments into expanding SFU’s technology program.

A new $126-million sustainable technology and engineering building is coming to Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $90-million investment by federal and provincial governments into expanding SFU’s technology program, to be combined with another $36 million of funding and land donations from the university and its donors.

“This building will house the students in the university’s new degree program in energy systems and environmental engineering,” Trudeau told a packed campus foyer.

"The new building will also have specialized space and support for graduate students in the mechatronics program who are looking to commercialize their interdisciplinary engineering research.”

The new five-storey, 15,000-square-metre facility will be located across from Surrey’s City Centre Library. The first two levels are scheduled to be completed by mid-2018.

President of SFU Andrew Petter said that Tuesday's announcement was the first part of the univesity's three-phase expansion project.

"It represents an important step in enlarging SFU's presence in Surrey's emerging city centre and increasing our capacity to serve the burgioning population south of the Fraser," said Petter. One-fifth of SFU's incoming students are from Surrey, making up over 2,600 students between 2010 and 2015.

The new building will house 440 full time equivalent student spaces – 320 undergraduates and 120 graduates.
