August 9, 2005

HOOGENDOORN, Hendrika

Mrs. Hendrika Hoogendoorn, beloved wife of the late Jacob Hoogendoorn passed away peacefully at Vernon

Hospice House and went to be with her Lord on August 9, 2005 at the age of 83 years. She is survived by her sons John (Geri) of Wrentham,

Alberta; Ben (Willie) of Abbotsford, BC; and daughters Jacqueline Hartgerink of Red Deer, Alberta and Helen

(Kevin) Gutknecht of Vernon BC;

13 grandchildren and 18 great-

grandchildren. Hendrika is also

survived by her sister Jean (John) of Agassiz, BC and sisters Gerry (Wim); Maria; Agaath (Simon) and sister-in-law Marie all of Holland as well as many extended family members in BC's Lower Mainland. She was

predeceased by her husband Jacob on June 12, 2004. Also predeceased by her parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 brother-in-law and 1 sister-in-law in Holland. Hendrika was born in Holland on July 3, 1922. In 1949 she

immigrated to Abbotsford BC with

husband Jake and son John. While

farming in Abbotsford, son Ben and daughter Jacqueline were born. Later she and Jake farmed in Agassiz BC where daughter Helen was born.

Hendrika was a great help on the dairy farm, milking cows and even driving

tractor. Gardening and reading were her favorite pastimes. In 1970 the

family moved to Lumby and began ranching. She and Jake retired in 1993 and moved to Vernon in 1997.

Hendrika lived a thankful life - she loved the Lord and was content with the simple things in life. She was most faithful to Jake - "Dad was a successful man and one of the reasons was Mom". Later in life when Jake faced mounting health challenges, Hendrika did her utmost to support him. Her love for the family was always obvious.

She spent many hours helping

grandchildren with school work and was always careful to treat each one equally. She was very faithful in writing letters to the family and never forgot a birthday. Hendrika was always

approachable and easy to talk to. Her unwavering faith in the Lord was truly evident throughout her life. We will all miss her dearly. Memorial service was held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 15 at Vernon Christian Reformed Church, 3605-12th Street, Vernon.

Private family interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery will precede the

service. In lieu of flowers donations to Vernon Hospice House, Canadian Food For The Hungry International.
