July 16, 1943 - November 30, 2022
In loving memory ~
Mary Short was full of life and a very hard worker who practiced joy and generosity. She was a quirky beautiful woman, and very independent into her last years. Even with Alzheimers, she would go walking almost daily in her favourite park - Fairfield Island.
She was born into an Irish Catholic family in Los Angeles, California and died as a Canadian citizen in Chilliwack, B.C. She was an activist, a beloved mother, grandmother, an awarded teacher, as well as a cherished wife to David Short (the Bookman).
Mary was a Radical Catholic worker with Saul Alinsky in Chicago in the 1960s working in the civil rights movement. She obtained her masters degree in education at Western Washington University in 1989. She was a teacher at schools in the Lower Mainland specializing in reading. Mary had the great honour of being a trusted teacher on Bella Bella two times in her life. She adored doing random acts of kindness for total strangers. In her later years she became an outstanding abstract painter. She would like to share her paintings with you @maryduffyshort on instagram.
Mary was so happy she immigrated north of the border. She appreciated Canada's beauty and the kindness of Canadians. She has loved living in our wonderful country. She leaves us with these words: "We are at the start of a tremendous good change in our world."
In lieu of flowers, Mary wishes for donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
