Opal Limbert - passed away at home in Fruitvale, BC on January 2nd, 2020. Opal Isabelle Vandale was born in Kamloops, BC on Sept. 4, 1926. She grew up in Agassiz, BC where she met and started a friendship with her future husband, Philip Limbert. After high school Opal moved to Vancouver and trained as a nurse at St. Paul's Hospital. Opal and Phil were married in Agassiz in 1949. The newlyweds settled in Vancouver where Opal continued nursing while Phil completed a degree in engineering. The couple moved to Trail where Phil began a 31-year career at Cominco (Teck) as an engineer while Opal became mother to 5 children.
During this time, as her children grew older, she volunteered at St. Michael's Catholic School. A devout Catholic all her life, she was a member of the CWL and the lay Order of Franciscans. After Phil retired from Cominco, he and Opal moved to White Rock, BC where they lived for 32 years. They became involved in the church (Star of the Sea and Good Shepherd) performing many services for the Catholic community.
Daily Mass and walking on the beach with her dogs were essential parts of Opal's life in White Rock. She was a friend to all dogs and offered to care for the pets of many friends. Opal enjoyed travelling, highlighted by a trip to Rome and the Holy Land.
Opal and Phil returned to the Kootenays in 2014 and settled in Fruitvale.
Opal is survived by her loving husband Phil and children Wayne (Marilyn), Ray (Kathryn), Alan and Jeanine (Scott), 12 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren. She is predeceased by her siblings Lawrence, Sylvester and Regina, as well as by her youngest daughter Denise. Cremation has taken place.
Funeral mass will be said by Father Nino Tuyo on Saturday, January 25th @ 1:00 pm. at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Fruitvale, followed by a reception in the church hall.
Eric Toneff of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements. Interment in Gardens of Gethsemani in South Surrey will be announced at a later date.
