Goodness and charity have won over tragedy the last week in both Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs, despite the potential for sadness.
First, the community of Agassiz was devastated to learn that a family with four young children had lost their home to a fire. While the family was just happy to be alive, to be together and to be safe, their friends and neighbours rallied together to make sure the family would also be clothed, fed and housed. With donations of money and clothing and more, the family is well on their way to a happy Christmas.
The outpouring of love from the community has been beautiful to behold.
But then, more shock as we learned that someone completely ruined Kyle Reilly's memorial.
Who would destroy such a special place, dedicated to a young life that was lost?
Who could be so heartless?
As it turns out, it matters little who dared to stoop so low. What truly is in the hearts and minds of people is that, once again, the community showed its true colours. Just as they did with the house fire, friends and neighbours circled the wagons and showed love and kindness as they worked together to rebuild the memorial.
While some Grinches may believe that it's just the season we're in, this temporary time of goodwill and charity, that is seeing neighbours lend each other a hand, it's more likely it's a solid sense of community.
And it's comforting to know that there is more good than bad in this world. And when faced with sadness, your community will be there to lift your spirits and help you back on your feet again.
