Weekends for a junior B hockey team don’t get much tougher than what the Chilliwack Jets are facing.

On Friday (Nov. 5), the Pacific Junior Hockey League squad hits the road for a date with the Ridge Meadows Flames. With a record of 12-3-1-0, the Flames are first in the Harold Brittain Conference, led by two of the top point-getters in the league.

Maple Ridge product Nicholas Amsler leads the PJHL in scoring with 33 points in 16 games. Another Maple Ridge product, Ryan Denney, leads the league in goals with 18 and is third in points with 28 in 16 outings. Shut them down and you’ve got a good chance to beat the top-heavy Flames, but that’s easy to say and very hard to do.

The Jets are home Sunday to face the first place team in the Tom Shaw Conference, the North Van Wolf Pack. With just one regulation time loss in 15 games, the Wolves are a deep and talented bunch, and they beat Chilliwack 5-3 when they last met on Oct. 23.

“These games will be a real test, and a chance to show the league that the Jets are a contender this season,” said Chilliwack hockey boss Clayton Robinson. “I think our top six of (Nicholas) Parkes, (Brendan) Williamson, (Caleb) Garet, (Reilley) Kotai, (Nolan) Wall and (Blake) Clease can match the top six of Ridge (Meadows). It will come down to who plays the better defensive game and who wins the special teams battle.”

The Jets are coming off two straight wins, beating the Port Moody Panthers 10-6 on the road Saturday (Oct. 30) and doubling up the Abbotsford Pilots by a 4-2 count Sunday (Oct. 31).

At 9-4-1-0, Chilliwack sits third in the Harold Brittain Conference behind Ridge Meadows and the Langley Trappers (12-3-0-1).

“The weekend was a success, getting back in the win column,” Robinson said. “I don’t think we played our best but it’s trending in the right direction.”
