Seven Chilliwack-area sports organizations are getting financial help from the provincial government.

The Local Sport Relief Fund (LSRF) provides grants of up to $7,500 to non-profit sports organizations to assist with expenses such as insurance, administrative costs, rent, storage costs and equipment.

In normal times these expenses would be covered by registration fees, event revenue and sponsorships.

But COVID took a massive bite out of the bottom line for the Chilliwack Ringette Association, Cheam Figure Skating Club, Chilliwack FC, Chilliwack Spartans Swim Club and Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association (FVYSA).

“We are thankful to receive this financial support,” said Andrea Laycock, executive director of the FVYSA and Chilliwack FC chair. “We are working hard to ensure we can provide a great recreational option and experience for youth in our community. This funding will help us meet costs as we kick start our programming and aim for this goal.”

This is the second round of funding, following an allocation of $1.5 million to 288 youth sports organizations in January. This time, 214 organizations are sharing $1 million in provincial and federal grant money.

“Sports and physical activity benefit our communities in so many ways and help contribute to our collective wellness,” said Dan Coulter, MLA for Chilliwack. “Through this second round of funding, we are doing even more to ensure local sport organizations weather the storm, maintain jobs and set people up for success as we move towards the final steps of B.C.’s restart plan.”

The Local Sport Relief Fund is administered by viaSport on behalf of the Province and prioritized organizations serving under-represented populations, including girls and women, persons with disabilities, underprivileged youth, racially diverse and LGBTQI2S communities.
