Chilliwack’s Jordyn Huitema is in Mexico this week, joining the Canadian national women’s soccer squad for a 10-day camp.
Twenty-six players hit the field Nov. 22 and will continue training through Dec. 1.
The camp includes a pair of international ‘A’ matches against Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 27 and Tuesday, Nov. 30.
“Canada’s trip to Mexico is pivotal in our journey towards the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship next summer,” said Canadian head coach Bev Priestman. “This tour will allow us to assess some players for the future and start some of our tactical adjustments ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. The tight window between matches played at altitude will make for difficult conditions and it is all part of the group building experiences for what is to come in 2022 and beyond.”
Huitema is one of six forwards at the camp, playing alongside 38-year-old Christine Sinclair. While she is still one of the youngest on the team at 20 years old, she is no longer the baby. Center-back Jade Rose and midfielder Nikayla Small are both 18.
The games against Mexico will represent the 16th and 17th international matches of 2021 for Canada, including last summer’s Olympics in Tokyo. Huitema’s crew has seven wins, two losses and six draws in 15 games to date. The team hasn’t lost in its last 12 outings, most recently beating New Zealand in a pair of October friendlies.
