Chilliwack’s Jordyn Huitema is looking forward to another opportunity represent her country on the soccer pitch.

In a tweet sent out Tuesday afternoon, Huitema acknowledged being added to the camp roster for Canada’s women’s soccer squad, which will spend two weeks preparing for the 2021 SheBelieves Cup.

“The pre-competition camp is designed to provide any players not in season with the chance to get in valuable preparation heading into the SheBelieves Cup,” said Bev Priestman, the team’s head coach. “It also provides us with an opportunity to see where players are ahead of selecting our final 23-player roster for the SheBelieves Cup.”

Huitema should be a slam dunk selection for the final roster. A professional player for Paris St-Germain in France, the 19 year old represents the next wave of talent for the nationals as veterans like Christine Sinclair, Diana Matheson, Desiree Scott and Sophie Schmidt near the end of their illustrious careers.

The SheBelieves Cup takes place Feb. 18-24 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. Canada is scheduled to face the United States, Japan, and Brazil at the sixth edition of the international tournament. All four nations reached the knockout phase of the last 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France 2019 and all have qualified for the 12-nation Tokyo Summer Olympics tournament, which COVID permitting would take place in July.

“The tournament will provide us with a great platform to start our short journey towards Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where we can introduce some new concepts and operate in a tournament setting which replicates the schedule of an Olympic tournament,” Priestman said. “We’re all really excited to get together and get to work as well as to see some new faces amongst the squad.”
