The Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame (CSHOF) is holding its annual general meeting (AGM) in virtual Zoom format Jan. 25.

The local history author and BC Sports Hall of Fame Curator will speak for 45 minutes prior to the AGM about the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Beck wrote on the subject titled Miracle Mile, telling the tale of England’s Roger Bannister and Australia’s John Landy, the first two men to break the four-minute barrier in the mile distance.

“Jason is an accomplished BC sports curator and author who had a knack for telling great sports stories,” said the CSHOF’s Shannon Bettles. “During the presentation you’ll relive the excitement from the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games where Canada won the gold medal in men’s 8 rowing on the Vedder Canal, and Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile at the Empire Stadium.”

Beck’s presentation starts at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the CSHOF business meeting.

Virtual attendance to the presentation and meeting is open and free to anyone who pre-registers. Anyone interested in attending should email the President Shannon Bettles at shannon.bettles@chilliwacksportshalloffame.com to obtain a Zoom access code prior to the meeting.

The Chilliwack Hall of Fame is also appealing to the community for volunteers interested in serving on the Board of Directors.

Like most other non-profit historical societies, heritage organizations, and museums, last year was a challenging one for the CSHOF, which was not able to maintain usual operations. The CSHOF display at the Chilliwack Coliseum was inaccessible and with community gatherings cancelled, in-person meetings were moved to a virtual environment. Despite these difficulties the CSHOF hosted a physically-distanced golf tournament fundraiser in partnership with the Chilliwack Ringette Association in the summer; and produced two pop-up exhibit panels for future community display.

A new Board of Directors will be elected at the AGM.

The Hall of Fame encourages community-minded individuals interested in or knowledgeable about Chilliwack’s sporting history to volunteer for a role. There are key positions opening, and volunteers are urgently needed. Anyone who has some time to give towards facilitating growth and development of the CSHOF Society is welcomed. The Board of Directors meet monthly to review and nominate potential inductees, plan induction activities and events, manage the display cases, and work with minor sports organizations and partners to celebrate Chilliwack’s sporting excellence.
