Conservative MP Mark Strahl thanked the people of Chilliwack-Hope for re-electing him into a fifth term on election night.
He and his supporters gathered at Duke's Country Pub for a volunteer dinner and to watch the results come in.
"I never take it for granted and I will look forward to fighting for them in Ottawa, fighting for the common sense values that they hold, and they trust me to take to the House of Commons on their behalf," he told Black Press after he gave a general speech to the audience.
"Pierre, I think, has had an amazing campaign from coast to coast," he said. "He has inspired our movement, inspired our members, and saw it with thousands of people, sometimes tens of thousands of people at his rallies. Canada needs change and Pierre is the one who I believe will bring it to Canada."
He suggested that if the Liberals only form a minority government — which still hadn't been settled by the following morning — that Canadians would be going to the polls again sooner than later.
"We're right on the doorstep," he said. "We're going to hold this Liberal minority government to account and the next time around, whenever that is, it could be very soon, I think Pierre will be poised to become the next Prime Minister of Canada."
He said he continues to back Poilievre, who lost his own riding Monday night to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy.
"Of all the campaigns I've been a part of, he's run the best campaign, the most principled, and I'm proud to support him as our leader," he said. "I think that he is the one that is best placed to take us forward and to take us to that next step of becoming the next government of Canada, so he has my full support."
Strahl won the Chilliwack-Hope riding handily with 35,768 votes, which is 54.9 per cent of the vote. (242 out of 243 polls reported.)
Liberal candidate Zeeshan Khan received 23,012 votes (35.3 per cent). NDP candidate Teri Westerby received 4,718 votes (7.2 per cent). Green candidate Salina Derish received 1,072 votes (1.6 per cent), PPC candidate Jeff Galbraith received 477 votes (0.7 per cent), and United Party of Canada candidate Chris Adam received 129 votes (0.2 per cent).
Elections Canada says the riding saw a voter turnout of about 67.39 per cent, which is 65,176 of 96,714 registered electors. That does not include electors who registered on election day.
