Motorhome goes up in flames near Island 22 in Chilliwack

Flames seen coming from door, window of motorhome on Cartmell Road

A motorhome went up in flames in Chilliwack on Thursday afternoon.

The Chilliwack Fire Department was called to the blaze in the 45000-block of Cartmell Road around lunchtime on April 11.

As they were heading to the fire, crews said they could see a column of smoke in the area. When they arrived on scene they reported seeing flames coming from the door and window of the recreational vehicle.

People in the area said it was being used as a residence, and assistant fire chief Krista Minar confirmed the occupant escaped the blaze without injury.

“The quick actions of the firefighters helped contain and extinguish the fire, minimizing damage to the unit,” Minar said in a press release later in the day. “Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among the firefighters or the occupant, who had safely evacuated the motorhome.”

Eleven firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 responded to the call.

The fire has been deemed accidental, and Minar is reminding residents to ensure that clear exit pathways are maintained in homes, businesses, travel trailers, and motorhomes, as this is vital for a safe evacuation during a fire emergency, given the rapid spread of fires.

The property was just down the road from the Island 22 encampment, which was dismantled earlier this year.
