It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Inez Anne Mellott (nee Otto) on March 20, 2024, at the age of 93.
Inez was born in Cereal, Alberta, and at the tender age of 16, she moved to Athabasca to attend high school. She excelled in her studies and athletics, particularly track and field.
While home one summer, Inez met the love of her life, Vern. Inez and Vern were married in 1952 and started their life together near Leduc, Alberta, where they raised their family. Inez tended a large garden and was well known for her delicious potato salad and desserts. She also enjoyed needlework, creating many colourful afghan blankets.
In 1990, Inez and Vern left Alberta for semi-retirement in Agassiz. They ran a small lawn maintenance business, and flower beds and shrubs flourished under Inez's care. After fully retiring, Inez and Vern participated in many activities at the Agassiz Friendship House. Although being an avid floor curler and crib player, Inez always appreciated spending time with friends more than winning the game.
Inez was a lifelong volunteer and felt it was important to contribute to the community. She was proud that she was able to continue her volunteering during the ten years while living at Agassiz Seniors Community.
Inez cherished spending time with her family. Inez and Vern had a wonderful 70th wedding anniversary celebration surrounded by their three children, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and their families, as well as many other relatives and friends. Following Vern's passing in 2023, Inez was grateful for the support from her many friends.
The family wishes to thank Jane and the staff at Agassiz Seniors Community for their thoughtful care and concern, and the staff at Cascade Hospice for their heartfelt care and consideration of Inez and the family.
In keeping with Inez's wishes, there will be a small family celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
