The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team has inked another new player for the 2024-25 Canada West season.

The team announced on April 12 that libero Keira Scharfenberg will be heading to the Fraser Valley from Sherwood Park, Alta. as part of the Cascades recruiting class.

“Keira has been playing around with a volleyball since she was a little kid, and has always been ahead of her age group in terms of skill level in the ball control area,” UFV head coach Janelle Rozema stated about her new recruit.

“She comes from a club program of excellence that knows what high-performance sport is, and she has a winning attitude and approach to the game.”

Listed as a libero, Scharfenberg also has experience playing the outside hitter position, meaning she will add some versatility to the Cascades roster.

“Keira is a really good communicator, and a highly intelligent athlete,” said Rozema. “She is someone who will really care about her teammates, and she’s also a really good learner so I think she’ll be driven to improve.”

The 5-9 athlete played high school volleyball at Strathcona Christian Academy and club with the Pandas Volleyball Club.

“I chose UFV because I know I will be challenged and pushed in such a highly competitive program,” Scharfenberg said about her decision. “The positive team culture is something I really look forward to being a part of, and I’m looking forward to experiencing what Abbotsford life has to offer.”

The UFV women’s volleyball team finished the CW season in third place at 20-4, but fell to the Alberta Golden Pandas in the CW bronze medal game on March 8.
