Supporting local businesses is more important than ever before.

The Harrison-Agassiz Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Shop Local Love Local celebratory event in Agassiz on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Aberdeen building and Pioneer Park.

The event includes a photo op with Cupid just in time for Valentine’s Day, a photo contest, local shopping and the chance to win hundreds of dollars in prizes from local businesses. Admission is free; it is recommended to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Agassiz-Harrison Community Services.

Love Local Shop Local is a year-long initiative that began Jan. 21 to promote local businesses and encourage shopping locally. The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Industry made this initiative possible through a $40,000 grant through the Government of Canada’s Strategic Activities Program.

“The Harrison-Agassiz Chamber is so excited about this grant and to be able to have this opportunity,” said Gwen Schmidt, chair of the Harrison-Agassiz Chamber of Commerce. “The shop local initiative ‘Love Local Shop Local’ Is giving us the chance to highlight the entire area of Harrison and Agassiz.”

Local celebrity Sasquatch is expected to attend; ShopSasquatch.ca is the online home of the Love Local Shop Local initiative and the event’s official hashtag is #ShopSasquatch.

“By bringing awareness to and highlighting businesses in the community and surrounding areas, we hope our residents, business owners, and visitors enjoy the campaign and take advantage of all the exciting things the (Chamber) team has worked so hard on,” Schmidt added.
