For many young cadets, going away to summer camp is to learn new skills and meet new friends.
But one local cadet has been for what he brought to camp — his leadership skills.
Cadet Isaiah Robinson, from the 1789 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Agassiz, was awarded the Lieutenant-General J.E. Vance Award during the final parade and sunset ceremony at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre.
The Lieutenant-General J. E. Vance Award is presented to the cadet on each of the four Instructor Courses who have demonstrated the qualities of a leader and is a role model for other Army Cadets.
Cadet Robinson was enrolled in the six-week Army Cadet Expedition Instructor Course, which sees the cadets learning first aid, mountain bike skills, canoeing, abseiling, and navigation. A major part of their summer’s training was a 15-day expedition which took them from Silver Star Mountain to Kamloops, where they combined their skills to hike, bike and canoe hundreds of kilometres. At a mid-trek break, the cadets enjoyed a white-water rafting experience on the Adam’s River.
After the final parade, the cadets made their way to their homes in western Canada.
During the summer, 1200 army, sea and air cadets from western Canada will have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.
