A long standing community tradition will continue on Sept. 7, with the 31st annual Agassiz United Church garage sale.
The sale has grown into a much-anticipated community event, as friends and neighbours gather to hunt for treasures and bargains. Many people in the community donate gently used items such as furniture, housewares, clothing, books, tools, toys, collectibles, antiques and sports equipment.
The annual garage sale relies on a small army of volunteers who work the whole week prior to the sale to sort, clean and price the donated items. The United Church Women's Group sets out a sumptuous homemade baking table in conjunction with the garage sale. Others make traditional Russian borscht, which is featured at the lunch counter along with sandwiches. The borscht is sold by the quart and is always sold out early in the day.
The church is once again inviting residents to consider donating anything they are no longer using, that could be of use to someone else. However, they are no longer accepting donations of old televisions and electronics.
They encourage all bargain hunters to drop by, adding that many wonderful treasures have been found at the sale in the past.
This is a special year for the Agassiz United Church, as they celebrate their 110th year.
"Our church has recently experienced some changes and a feeling of renewal," said Karen Hatt, chair of the church's council. "We have noticed an increase in attendance and an enhanced energy within our congregation, to move forward with sustainability and the growth of the church."
If you wish to donate items to the sale, the committee will have them picked up the week of Sept. 2-6, or they can be dropped off at the church that same week.
