The yellow exterior of the Aberdeen building in Agassiz is a little more blue these days.
Blue construction fencing surrounds the home of The Observer as major renovations are underway. The sidewalk in front of the public washrooms was torn up by Tuesday morning and construction on both sides of the building began early this week.
Back in late February, the province awarded $395,000 to the District of Kent to upgrade the building. These upgrades will include a storage shed for event supplies, improvements to the upstairs space and an outdoor concert stage on the west end of the building. It’s on that same side that the district hopes to collaborate with the Agassiz Harrison Historical Society to create a historic mural and storyboards detailing the history of downtown Agassiz and the Aberdeen building itself.

The current building was erected in 1995 and is a replica of the historic Aberdeen Hotel.
The public washrooms on the outside of the building are closed during construction.
