Inaugural Run for Hope helps Fraser Canyon Hospital

New 5K run will help replace emergency room beds

A fundraising run is being held this weekend to help improve the ER at Fraser Canyon Hospital.

The Run for Hope is in its inaugural year, and will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29. Runners can register online through the sponsor, the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation’s website. All of the money raised will go toward replacing the trauma beds in the emergency room, which have reached the end of their expected lifespan.

Participants can run or walk the trail, which covers both roadways and trails. It begins at 9 a.m. at the hospital, just off the old helipad. The run will carry along the trail behind the hospital, and connect to Thacker Regional Park and the Trans Canada Trail, before returning to the hospital. The route planned is 5 km.

The registration is only $10 a participant, and pledge forms are available online.

While this is the first Run for Hope, the foundation has held fundraisers in the past to support Fraser Valley hospitals. In Hope last year, they held a fashion show that raised $14,000 to replace the mattresses at Fraser Canyon. That event will return in 2020, a foundation representative said, and the Run for Hope will take place the year after that.

Each bed in the ER has a price tag of $12,000 and there are four needed. Between 11,000 and 12,000 people visit the Fraser Canyon Hospital’s emergency room each year.
