The Galvao family didn’t let a pandemic stop their New Year’s Day tradition.
At noon on Jan. 1, Susan, Brian, McKenna and Walter Galvao hopped into Harrison Lake for a polar bear swim.
They first started the chilly tradition in 2019, when the Agassiz Harrison Fire Department launched the community’s first polar bear swim in support of Agassiz Harrison Community Services. This year, COVID-19 cancelled the larger community event.

Instead of cancelling tradition, the family hopped into the lake on their own — bringing in 2021 with a frigid splash.
