If you go out near the woods today, you’re sure of a not-so-big surprise.
Alana Irvine was walking near McCombs Drive in Harrison Hot Springs near the Spirit Trail entrance when she spotted movement a few feet up a tree.
She shot a quick video of a black bear cub, hanging around in a tree remarkably close to the road, partially obscured by the foliage around it.

She posted the video to a local social media group, saying her dog Koda heard something in the trees. She assumed it was a squirrel at first.
“Koda was spooked,” she wrote.
She added the mother bear was nearby and she crossed the street to avoid any confrontation.
Black bears are not a particularly uncommon sight in Agassiz-Harrison, especially during the spring. They can sometimes be seen foraging in farm fields or wandering close to walking trails.
It’s particularly important during this time of year to secure food and garbage to prevent human-bear conflicts.
