Chilliwack campus hosted Try-a-Trade, showcasing education and career options to potential students

High school students from around the region were at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) for the school’s annual Try-a-Trade event on Thursday.

Young participants watched demos of the various programs available at UFV’s Trades and Technology Centre (TTC), and in many cases tried hands-on simulators of applied skills.

Try-a-Trade ran in conjunction with the Upper Fraser Valley Skills Canada BC 2019 regional competition at the TTC building.

“These young people are starting to choose careers and we want to make sure they know what’s available to them,” says John English, dean of applied and technical studies. “Their challenges are going to be learning how to keep up to date. The technology revolves and evolves very, very quickly… what they’re going to be here for is to learn how to learn.”

He said there will continue to be a high demand for trades, and added that new trades are emerging all the time.
