Sunday, Sept. 10, has been declared World Suicide Prevention Day in the District of Kent.

Mayor Sylvia Pranger and the district council made the proclamation on Thursday, Sept. 7.

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s business,” the declaration reads, in part. “We all need to understand how to help others and ourselves reach out for help in the face of hopelessness and despair so that we can all engage in the process of building lives we want to live.”

The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention is hosting a free virtual event on Saturday, Sept. 9, called “Crisis Lines and Launching 988: Creating Hope Through Action.” The 988 crisis service is set to launch on Nov. 30, and this year’s virtual event is meant to explore what callers can expect from the service. Speakers will include Dr. Allison Crawford from the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health.
