A former Abbotsford man who served jail time for the 2018 unprovoked assault of a man with autism has been gunned down in Toronto.

The Toronto Police Service announced on Nov. 9 that Parmvir Chahil, 27, was shot in a parking garage on Yonge Street the previous evening and died at the scene. The suspect(s) fled in a newer model silver SUV.

Chahil was living in Windsor, Ont., according to a press release.

He was sentenced in November 2020 in Ontario to a nine-month jail term and one year of probation on a charge of aggravated assault.

He and two other men – Jaspaul Uppal and Ronjot Dhami – attacked a 29-year-old man with autism who was sitting on the stairs of the Square One bus terminal in Mississauga, Ont. on March 13, 2018.

The three surrounded the victim and punched and kicked him several times before walking away. The victim suffered a broken nose and facial cuts, police said at the time.

Investigators then released photos of the assailants and a video of the attack to try to identity the men.

Chahil was the second person identified and was arrested in Windsor 10 days after the attack.

Uppal also received a nine-month sentence and one year of probation.

Dhami was sentenced to one year in prison – but had already served that time in pre-sentence custody – and two years’ probation.

Prior to the attack, Chahil was living in Abbotsford, where he was believed to be the target of a 2015 drive-by shooting that killed innocent man Ping Shun Ao, 74, when he was struck by a stray bullet.

Chahil was Ao’s next-door neighbour on Promontory Court. No one has ever been charged in relation to Ao’s death.
