Hope and Agassiz elementary students learn about welding

Students observe TRU welding program at welding trailer at Hope Secondary

Fun times were had by Hope and Agassiz elementary students who got the chance to visit the Thompson Rivers University (TRU)’s mobile welding trailer at Hope Secondary School (HSS) last week.

The elementary students learned about welding as a trade career last Monday to Tuesday (Nov. 27 to 28) and got the chance to observe SD78 high school students as they welded. The high school students are taught by Michael “Mike” Grainger who is the TRU instructor for the mobile training unit (MTU).

The high school students are part of the TRU welding program first came to Hope — through the MTU — on Aug. 3, 2015. According to TRU, the MTU is “a 12 welding-bay expandable trailer capable of delivering the welding foundation program and other industry contract training in smaller and remote communities.”

In addition to Hope, the MTU has also been stationed in Agassiz, Chase, Clearwater, Clinton, Lillooet, and Mica Creek.
