After a successful first run, an energy initiative is expanding in Harrison Hot Springs.

It’s On Electric Company, B.C. Hydro and FortisBC recently introduced the Direct Install Program for single-family, detached homes in early February and have now broadened the program to include townhomes, according to Sash Sorg, client relations for It’s On.

The program offers free energy assessments and upgrades to Harrison residents, which include everything from energy-saving lightbulbs to efficient water fixtures, weather stripping in doors and smart thermostats. B.C. Hydro and FortisBC covers all costs. Prior to expansion, the first run of the Direct Install Program was limited to only 100 homes.

“Conservation is the first and best way to meet our future electricity needs, manage growing demand on the grid and keep costs low,” said a letter of endorsement for the program from BC Hydro. “The Direct Install program is one of many ways you can reduce your electricity use, save money and help your community.”

Applications are available online at https://www.itsonelectric.com/village-of-harrison-direct-install or by calling It’s On Electric at 1-800-874-3831. After the application is submitted, residents can expect to have a representative from It’s On call for a short interview. Following a successful interview, the assessment begins and installation of smaller energy upgrades can happen on the spot.

After installation, residents will receive energy efficiency and energy-saving information as well as a detailed report of upcoming energy-saving opportunities.

Harrison Hot Springs was selected for the program because Harrison is powered by an overtaxed substation, as is the District of Kent. This has been an ongoing issue for a number of years. These energy-saving measures at no cost to the residents is designed to help relieve some of the pressure on the current infrastructure before any additional, more significant efforts start rolling out in the next couple of years. Sorg said if everything proceeds as planned, the oncoming infrastructure costs should be at a minimum.

It’s On Electric Company is based in Surrey, established in 2006.
