Sunday marked the beginning of October as well as the start of the Purple Light Nights campaign across North America – and here in Agassiz-Harrison.

For the whole month of October, purple lights will shine throughout the area to send the message that domestic violence has no place in the community.

The District of Kent will host an information booth at the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre – 6660 Pioneer Avenue – throughout the month. Purple light bulbs, wrist bands, lawn signs and mugs are available at the CRCC, the Agassiz RCMP detachment (6869 Lougheed Highway) and the District of Kent Municipal Hall (7170 Cheam Avenue). Everything is made available by donation.

Agassiz RCMP Victim Services coordinator Darlene Wahlstrom said the campaign is well received every year with people asking questions about how they can help others who may be in situations of domestic violence and those looking to spread the word by adding their own purple lights.

Lighting ceremonies took place in Chilliwack on Tuesday evening and in Hope on Sunday. Life-size silhouettes of domestic violence victims will be placed throughout Hope, Chilliwack and the District of Kent.

Purple Light Nights began in Washington in 2007 and has since spread across much of the United States and into B.C., Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta as well as the island of Guam.

Victim Services supports those affected by crime and trauma through emotional support, court services, information and guidance through a time of crisis.

To learn more about Victim Services and how you can help, contact Wahlstrom at the Agassiz RCMP by calling 604-793-3394.
