A day of leadership skills and plenty of smiles were had by School District 78 students during the Shine with Horizons Leadership Conference.

The Hope & Area Recreation Centre’s Conference Room was packed Wednesday morning (May 8) as 140 students, from across SD78, attended the one-day conference.

The event was hosted by Hope Secondary School’s (HSS) leadership class and promised students a day of community, empowerment, and helping students to understand what it means to be a leader. As part of the event, leadership students heard presentations from two keynote speakers, Maryanne Oketch (the season 42nd winner of Survivor) and Scott Hammell (a magician, speaker, and four-time Guinness World Record holder).

“We are so proud to be passing on the knowledge and skills we’ve accumulated,” said HSS’s Graduating Leadership Class of 2024 in a joint statement. “There is nothing more meaningful to us than watching the faces of our younger leaders light up as they get inspired, connect with their peers, and learn to take pride in their achievements.

“Through this conference, we aim to impact the younger students and leave them feeling confident in themselves and their futures. Leadership has allowed each of us to make incredible, lifelong connections within the class, the school, and the community.”

In addition to the presentations, leadership students were also provided lunch and snacks, took part in a Horizons think tank, and did activities that challenged their leadership and team building skills.
