Amid omicron’s arrival, Agassiz-Harrison COVID-19 cases still low

Four new cases recorded between Dec. 12 and 18

Despite a surge sparked by the arrival of the omicron variant in B.C. about three weeks ago, Agassiz-Harrison has yet to experience a surge of its own this month.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), four new cases of COVID-19 were recorded between Dec. 12 and 18. This is up slightly from three cases recorded during the previous week and remains well below the 2021 average of about 7.8 cases per week.

To date, there have been 393 cases of COVID-19 in Agassiz-Harrison in 2021. In 2020, there were 95 cases of COVID-19 in the local health area.

There are no active exposure events at Agassiz-Harrison schools or within the Fraser-Cascade School District 78 as a whole. There have been 14 exposure events across the district in the 2021-22 school year.

With the coming of the holiday season, Agassiz-Harrison’s vaccine growth was relatively slow this past week. There has been no change across most age groups between Dec. 13 and 22, except the 50-plus population, which is now 89 per cent fully vaccinated, and booster distribution to seniors aged 70 and older, ticking up to 73 per cent. Vaccination in children ages 5 to 11 are also rising, at 22 per cent as of Dec. 22.
