Condition has not improved for two crash survivors

A 20-year-old driver from Mission and his 19-year-old passenger are still in critical and serious condition in hospital today following a collision Tuesday night with a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser in Agassiz.

The condition of two young men involved in a head-on collision with a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser Tuesday night in Agassiz has not improved.

The 20-year-old driver, identified as Steve Genberg of Mission, is still in critical condition in hospital. Genberg is a graduate of Mission Secondary and an employee of Mission Towing, according to his Facebook page.

The 19-year-old passenger, who has not yet been identified, remains in serious condition.

Abbotsford Police’s major crime unit has taken over the investigation. Const. Ian MacDonald said reports that the police car did not have on its emergency lights at the time of the crash have not been confirmed.

“We still have to sort out exactly what happened, and it has to be based on fact,” he said.

He said the Ford Mustang driven by Genberg was at the front of a convoy of about five vehicles. They were headed to Harrison Hot Springs on Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road at about 11 p.m. , when the Mustang and the marked police car collided head-on.

MacDonald said the officer was en route to assist with a report of a disturbance in Agassiz. He was treated in hospital and released.

The two young men were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

MacDonald said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

He said any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police are asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.
