COVID-19 rates remain low as local weekly average drops

Average is now lower than eight cases per week for the first time in months

Local COVID-19 cases have been consistently low for the past five weeks, causing the weekly case average to drop below eight for the first time in months.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has recorded three new cases of COVID-19 in the Agassiz-Harrison Local Health area between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11. This is down slightly from five cases reported during the previous week. There have been a total of 389 cases since the beginning of the year for an average of 7.9 cases per week.

There have been no active COVID-19 exposure events within Fraser-Cascade schools since Nov. 30.

COVID-19 vaccines are rolling out for 5-11-year-olds throughout the province, including in Agassiz-Harrison. As of Dec. 13, 17 per cent of children in the age group have received their first dose of the vaccine. 81 per cent of the population over the age of 12 in Agassiz-Harrison has been fully vaccinated (85 per cent partially vaccinated). 64 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated (71 per cent partially vaccinated).

83 per cent of Agassiz-Harrison residents over the age of 18 have been fully vaccinated (86 per cent partially vaccinated). 74 per cent of residents in the 18-49 category are fully vaccinated (80 per cent partially vaccinated).

88 per cent of Agassiz-Harrison residents aged 50 and older are fully vaccinated (91 per cent partially vaccinated). 67 per cent of locals aged 70 and older have received a COVID-19 booster.

According to the latest data summary from the BCCDC (dated Dec. 2), 88 per cent of the 12-plus population has been fully vaccinated across B.C. Over the past month, unvaccinated individuals accounted for 19 per cent of the population, 56 per cent of new cases, 69 per cent of hospitalizations and 80 per cent of critical care admissions due to COVID-19.
