The District of Kent is among eight B.C. communities that is receiving a $1,000 grant to help create a legacy project or celebration.
The awards are being given from the Ministry of Health under the Age-friendly program that many communities in B.C. have been accessing.
Kerry Hilts, director of Community Services for the District of Kent, said they will be using their grant money to sponsor the seniors fair that is coming up next month.
The fair is going to be held at Cheam Village on Sept. 18, and will focus on providing information and helpful resources to seniors on their health and well-being.
"There were only eight communities given the grants and we were one of them," Hilts said, adding that it's a continuation of the work they've been doing over the past few years.
The other communities to receive the grants are Anmore, Cobble Hill, Granisle, Kitimat, Telkwa, Vancouver and Vanderhoof.
To achieve Age-friendly BC Recognition, communities must complete four steps. These include establishing an advisory committee, passing a local government resolution, conducting an age-friendly assessment and developing and publishing an action plan. The participation of local seniors also is required and is an integral part of this process. Twenty five communities in B.C. have been recognized as age-friendly.
